Baltimore, M.D. — November 24, 2025 —Dr. Arthur Burnett, a world-renowned urologist and expert in men’s sexual and prostate health, recently appeared on the Sexual Health for Men podcast with Dr. Anne Truong to discuss screening, treatment, and the often-overlooked impact of prostate cancer on sexual function.

Sexual Health For Men is a podcast hosted by Dr. Anne Truong, an intimate health physician with over 20 years of experience. The show focuses on achieving sexual vitality for life and provides science-based, medication-free advice for men dealing with issues such as erectile dysfunction, intimacy challenges, and overall sexual wellness. Listeners are men who are interested in improving their sexual function while understanding underlying health factors, including cardiovascular and hormonal health.

Dr. Burnett emphasized the importance of prostate cancer screening, particularly for high-risk populations such as African American men and those with a strong family history. He explained that while guidelines vary, men between ages 55 and 70 should consider annual PSA (prostate-specific antigen) tests, with some high-risk men beginning as early as age 40–45.

Prostate cancer presents a spectrum of severity. Some types can be safely monitored, while others require immediate intervention. After an elevated PSA, further evaluation, often including a biopsy, is needed to determine the presence and aggressiveness of cancer. Treatment decisions including surgery (prostatectomy), radiation, or other interventions depend on age, overall health, and cancer risk level.

Dr. Burnett explained that both surgery and radiation can impact erectile function due to the proximity of nerves and blood vessels critical for erections. With modern nerve-sparing surgical techniques, about 50% or more of men can regain erectile function over time, with additional support from medications, vacuum devices, injections, or penile implants when necessary.

Dr. Burnett also discussed “penile rehabilitation,” a comprehensive approach to recovery addressing biological, psychological, and relational factors. He stressed the importance of men maintaining general health—exercise, diet, sleep, and avoidance of smoking—as part of optimizing outcomes and sexual function after treatment.

Dr. Burnett addressed the societal taboo surrounding male sexual health.

“Sexual function is a true indicator of overall health, yet it’s still rarely discussed openly,” he said. He encouraged men to proactively address sexual health concerns with healthcare professionals and highlighted the broader impacts of healthy sexual function on longevity, happiness, and quality of life.
