Charlottesville, VA — October 8, 2025 — Dr. Arthur Burnett, a leading urologist and Johns Hopkins professor, appeared on Living Local DMV to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and regular screenings during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

Living Local DMV, a leading lifestyle and community news program, airs daily on DCW50 (2 p.m.) and DC News Now (1 p.m.), reaching an estimated 50,000–150,000 viewers per episode and more than 2 million households across the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia region. The show spotlights local people, places, and initiatives that shape the DMV community. By appearing on the program, Dr. Burnett reached audiences directly in his core service region, reinforcing his role as a trusted local expert on men’s health and urology.

In his live segment, Dr. Burnett discussed the critical role of early diagnosis in improving outcomes for men, particularly those at higher risk due to age, race, or family history. He emphasized that proactive conversations about prostate health can save lives and help remove stigma around men’s health issues.

Early-stage prostate cancer typically shows no symptoms, making screening vital to detect disease before it progresses. With this study from Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James),  which found that 80% of Americans are unaware that early prostate cancer is often asymptomatic, Dr. Burnett aims to highlight the importance of proactive health literacy, particularly among men who may delay screenings due to misinformation or stigma.

“When patients understand their health, they gain the power to make informed, confident choices,” says Dr. Burnett. “That’s especially important for sexual and urologic health, where stigma or discomfort often stand in the way of open conversation.”

Dr. Burnett also shared insights from his book, The Johns Hopkins Patient’s Guide to Prostate Cancer, which serves as an accessible resource for patients and families navigating diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.
